Greenland

The next country we are visiting is Greenland with Greenlandic cuisine and Kalaallit Kaagiat – Greenlandic Cake
Greenland is an autonomous country within Denmark. It is the largest island in the world and the least densely populated country. The original inhabitants of Greenland were migrants from Canada and later from Iceland and Norway. Located in Antartica, 3/4 of the island is covered in ice, so only 1/4 of the island is inhabited.

Greenland has been ruled by both Norway and Denmark at various times. However, in 1814, it became a Danish colony. In 1953, it became part of Denmark but in later years, the Greenland people wanted independent autonomy. In 1979, they were granted home rule and then in 2008, they were granted the Self Government Act. This transferred even more power to Greenland from the Danish Royal Government, allowing Greenland to independently govern themselves.
popular in Greenland eat whale blubber, seal and caribou. they live off the sea you have to consider what’s available. In their arctic temperatures, it’s not like chicken, pigs or cows would survive grazing outside at temperatures 20-40 degrees below 0. They eat what they can raise and what is available in their climate for survival. No produce grows in their temperatures – so what else are they going to eat. Since everything has to be brought in, prices for basic things like milk or lettuce are astronomical

SUAASAT

National dish. The national dish of Greenland is suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic soup. It is often made from seal, or from whale, reindeer, or seabirds. The soup often includes onions and potatoes, and is simply seasoned with salt and pepper, or bay leaf.

Kalaallit Kaagiat – Greenlandic Cake
Other than the marine animals, much of Greenland cuisine comes from Denmark. This cake, which is really a sweet bread, is the closest thing Greenland has to a national dish.

Greenland is a massive island and autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Much of its land surface is covered in ice. Most of its small population lives along the ice-free, fjord-lined coast, particularly in the southwest. Its northerly position, largely above the Arctic Circle, results in natural phenomena such as summer’s midnight sun and winter’s Northern Lights.Capital: Nuuk Area: 2.166 million km²Population: 56,171 (2017) Continent: North America

Greenland is located between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Canada and northwest of Iceland. The territory comprises the island of Greenland–the largest island in the world–and more than a hundred other smaller islands

ICELAND

Baked Fish
Iceland has always been a nation of fishermen, so the most diverse dishes from the country are undoubtedly those with seafood. While fish is prepared and served in a wide variety of ways, perhaps the most palatable to people from all backgrounds is when it is baked in the national tradition.

Baked fish served with rice.

Iceland

Hjónabandsæla

Icelandic for “wedded bliss”, this is a bakery treat that marries (see what we did there?) a buttery pastry with a blueberry paste, ticker than jam. They go very well together, hence the name. The pastry is laid in strips, which give the pastry a particular baked lattice. Its not too sweet, and is very nice with coffee, like Kleina (see above). Sometimes, it takes the form of a pie, but very often it is consumed as individual tart-like treats
